"It could happen to anybody." says Courtney.
"It" being the tragic 2009 Taconic State Parkway crash wherein a 36-year-old mother of 2, driving an SUV with her children and their 3 cousins on a Sunday afternoon, went the wrong way for 1.7 miles on the freeway, ultimately crashing head-on with an oncoming SUV.
8 people died, including her 2 children and their 3 young cousins.
The story grabbed national attention when the driver's husband refused to accept the conclusion that his wife was heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash, despite a BAC level of .19 (.08 is the legal limit).
Toxicology results and eyewitnesses who saw her vomiting on the side of the road were not enough to convince him. This was not the wife that he last saw 3 hours before the crash, he maintained.
